Feeling exhausted is something everyone experiences at some point. This feeling is what motivates us to go to sleep and get the rest that our body finds necessary for survival. However, excessive fatigue can sometimes indicate that something is amiss in the body. Is it adrenal fatigue, or something else?

What Is Adrenal Fatigue?

The adrenal glands regulate various hormones that impact a person’s blood pressure, immune system response, and metabolism. They produce cortisol and adrenaline during times of stress.

When a person is under a great amount of stress and their adrenal glands keep producing adrenaline and cortisol, the glands may eventually get tired out. At some point, they may not be able to create enough of these hormones that are required to cope with chronic stress. When this happens, a person may experience symptoms such as brain fog, tiredness, or feeling overwhelmed or run down. Furthermore, they may experience weight gain or an inability to lose weight, cravings for sweet or salty snacks, and difficulty recovering from stress.

Does Adrenal Fatigue Really Exist?

Some scientists are skeptical regarding whether adrenal fatigue is a real phenomenon. Scientists from the Federal University of Sao Paulo authored a study called “Adrenal Fatigue Does Not Exist: A Systematic Review.” They examined thousands of studies regarding adrenal fatigue and discovered no evidence that it is an authentic disease.

However, even if this discredits the existence of adrenal fatigue as an actual disease, it does not discredit the fact that the symptoms exist.  Excessive stress does have negative consequences on the body. The University of Miami published a paper which reveals that chronic stress leads to hindered immune response and high blood pressure. It also leads to weight gain, albeit possibly indirectly. Depression is also another possible culprit for these symptoms.

How To Feel Better

There are various routes a person can take in order to feel better. One of the most important methods is to reduce stress, and in order to do so, it is smart to increase your amount of sleep. At least eight hours of sleep is ideal. Another good technique is to modify your diet, preferably to consume enough omega-3 fatty acids. Symptoms should reduce within about six weeks.

Of course, a person should see a doctor for a proper diagnosis if they continuously experience symptoms such as chronic exhaustion, moodiness, excessive stress, weight issues, and depression.
