If there’s one aspect of home life that everyone is ramping up in 2020, it is the ability to clean. As we’re spending more hours at home, sometimes with kids, pets, significant others, and roommates, the challenges of keeping on top of messes seem only to have grown bigger. There are simply more dishes, more dirt, more laundry, more pet hair, and more messes on the floor.

While we all make the enormous effort to keep dirt and germs at bay, some cleaning supplies have proven more useful than others. We’ve got a selection of some of the top cleaning products of the year, as selected by top websites Good Housekeeping, Real Simple, The Spruce, and Your Best Digs. You might find that at least one of these will make cleaning at least a little easier.

Tackle a sinkful of dishes

Cleaning a sinkful of dishes is one of those tasks that happens multiple times every day. Some dish soap brands make the job easier than others. The Good Housekeeping Top Tested Cleaning Awards, the magazine’s annual award for cleaning products, named Dawn Platnium Power Dish Spray as the best product to scrub the greasiest pots and pans. Real Simple magazine loves Mrs.Meyers products for those times when you have a sinkful of dishes. The website The Spruce, in an analysis of all-natural products, made Common Good dish soap its pick.

Scrubbers and sponges are just as important as dish soap when you’re trying to get pots, pans, and plates clean. Good Housekeeping named the Scotch Brite scratch-free glass top wand as the best scrubber to use when soaking doesn’t get everything off. Alternately, the website Your Best Digs called out the Scrub Daddy sponge for this task.

Clean carpets and hard flooring

Both carpets and hardwood floors present their own cleaning challenges, especially if you have pets and kids. To keep dust and dirt at bay, Good Housekeeping recommends the Dynamic U1 Powerline Upright Vacuum. Alternately, the editors of Real Simple preferred the Miele Compact C1 Pure Suction Vacuum.

For hardwood floors, The Spruce preferred Aunt Fannie’s floor cleaner vinegar wash. Your Best Digs called out the Apex Shark vacuum with a soft roller for its choice for cleaning hardwood floors. It also liked the Bissel PowerFresh steam mop if you need to clean wet messes.

If you have pets, cleaning their accidents and pet hair is another big household chore. Real Simple prefers the Eufy RoboVac 15T to keep pet hair from getting overwhelming while Your Best Digs preferred The Shark vacuum for the same task. For pet messes, Real Simple liked Nature’s Miracle pet spray, while Good Housekeeping called out Bissell’s Professional Pet Stain and Odor Remover.

Get your bathrooms sparkling

Bathrooms are one of the least-loved household cleaning tasks, but there are plenty of tools and products to help. The Spruce recommends ECOS GooseNeck Bottle Toilet Cleaner and Method’s Antibacterial Bathroom Cleaner. Good Housekeeping named Microban’s 24-hour multipurpose cleaner to its list.

Because you can’t forget about toilet scrub brushes when talking about bathroom cleaning, editors included them on their lists. Real Simple preferred a wall-mounted toilet brush called the Hygenic by Sanimaid. Editors at Your Best Digs preferred both the Simple Human and Oxo toilet brushes as their top two choices for permanent brushes, and the Clorox toilet wand as their choice for a disposable tool.

For getting rid of grout discoloration and other bathroom stains, Good Housekeeping named the Mr. Clean Sheet Erasers to its list. Aside from being indispensable in the bathroom, this tool is useful in the kitchen, mudroom, and just about anywhere stains show up.

Keep clothes clean and fresh

What you put into your clothes washer and dryer plays a big part in how clean your clothes get and how long they last. This is especially true if you’re dealing with stubborn stains, dingy whites, and frequently worn items.

The editors at Good Housekeeping liked Botanicals Liquid Laundry Detergent for an all-natural choice in this area. The Spruce also picked an all-natural product, Molly Suds Laundry Detergent Powder. If you want to go the conventional route, Your Best Digs preferred Tide Coldwater Clean and Good Housekeeping picked Tide PowerPods.

Keeping laundry in top shape requires more than just detergent, however. For liquid fabric softeners, editors at Good Housekeeping picked Downy Ultra Free and Gentle liquid softener and conditioner. They also called out Bounce WrinkleGuard Mega Dryer Sheets and Febreeze Clothing Odor Eliminator. If you need to take care of wrinkles after they’re dried and through the laundry, Good Housekeeping recommended the CHI handheld garment steamer as a must-have tool.

When it comes to pretreating stubborn stains. Real Simple likes both Shout Stain Remover Wipes and Dreft’s Portable Pretreater Pen. The editors at Your Best Digs made Oxyclean their top choice, while Good Housekeeping put Shout Advanced Action Gel Stain Remover on its list.
