Into the love lives of the ‘Game of Thrones’ cast
Winter is upon us, and so is the final season of Game of Thrones. If you’re an avid watcher, then you probably have your favorite on-screen couple (or had, seeing as no one on the show is safe from the jaws of death). It may break your heart when you find out that those actors actually go home to someone very different at the end of the day.
You may be surprised to find that some of these actors met their soulmates through the show, and some met under very different circumstances. Sure, in Westeros their lives may be warped and twisted, but in real life, they’ve managed to find their happy endings.
Kristofer Hivju and Gry Molvær Hivju
Kristofer Hivju is best known for playing the sometimes hilarious, sometimes weird, and often defiant Tormund Giantsbane in Game of Thrones. He first appears in the third season of the show, has made consistent appearances throughout the seasons, and is considered to be a fan favorite.
Although Tormund is continuously lusting after Brienne of Tarth in the show, Hivju married longtime girlfriend, Gry Molvær Hivju in 2015, and the pair have two daughters together. In the HBO hit-show, Hivju may seem quite monstrous and intimidating, but in real life, he’s a devoted husband and father. He is often known for bringing his family to set, and for putting his feelings for his wife on display through his captions on Instagram.
Peter Dinklage and Erica Schmidt
Although Dinklage has quite a resume under his belt, he found major success for his edgy portrayal of Tyrion Lannister. It seems that Dinklage’s wife also has some major achievements and a work ethic on par with that of her husband. While Dinklage makes magic happen in front of the camera, Schmidt makes it happen behind-the-scenes. Schmidt is an award-winning playwright and theater director in New York.
The couple married in 2005 and had a daughter in 2011. These two are known to be a little more low-key than the other cast members. When their first child was born, there were reports claiming that the couple named her “Zelig,” but this has yet to be confirmed by them. They had a second child in 2017, and have not revealed to the media the name or sex of the child.
Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas
The relationship between Turner and this Jonas Brother has been a very high profile one, but we guess that’s what happens when you’re Lady Sansa Stark of Winterfell and Joe Jonas from The Jonas Brothers! The pair met on very modest terms considering their A-list status. They met like many people do every day (and not from Hinge or Tinder), but through mutual friends.
Often seen wearing ridiculous expressions (much to the paparazzi’s contempt), the couple is considered to be one of the more hilarious couples in Hollywood. They made headlines when they decided to elope in Vegas on May 1, 2019, through a 15-minute ceremony led by an Elvis impersonator. Oh, and the rings they gave each other? Yeah, they were ring pops.
Alfie Allen and Allie Teilz
Whether you love or hate Theon Greyjoy, you have to admit he had one of the most significant character arcs in the show. Alfie Allen received high praises for his adaptation and performance of the character and has recently celebrated some major successes in his personal life. With his older sister being Lily Allen (yes, that Lily Allen), it seems that he’s familiar with the pressures of the spotlight.
Girlfriend Allie Teilz, is a well-respected DJ in Hollywood and has played at events including the Oscars, the Golden Globe Awards, the Emmys, the Grammys, and the after parties at Coachella Music Festival. The pair welcomed their first child on October 22, 2018, and shared the news with their thousands of followers on their separate Instagram accounts.
Carice Van Houten and Guy Pearce
Let’s be honest, Carice Van Houten, A.K.A The Red Woman, A.K.A Melisandre, is a chilling character on Game of Thrones, and sometimes it’s a little weird to believe that she’s played by someone who’s the complete opposite of her in real life. Van Houten met her guy, Guy Pearce, while the pair were filming a Western movie together called Brimstone.
Although the chemistry between the two was apparent behind-the-scenes, they’ve remained quiet about their relationship. In 2016, the couple welcomed their first child together, Monte Pearce. The couple is wary about posting photos together, and although they’ve posted pictures of their child, his face is usually blocked out. Pearce does not have an Instagram account, so the snapshots are typically shown through Van Houten’s lens.
Gwendoline Christie and Giles Deacon
The two have been dating for less than a decade, but their astounding affections for each other will make you let out a collective “aww.” Christie has gushed to People Magazine, “I don’t think I’ll ever stop being in awe of my partner’s colossal talent. As a designer and as a human being. I mean it.” Ugh, swoooon.
It looks like even though Christie plays the serious and resilient Brienne of Tarth in the show, she’s just a big softy in real life. It seems that her beau, Giles Deacon, was “instantly smitten,” upon coming face to face with the actress. Deacon is well-known for his role as Creative Director and Founder of Giles Deacon group, Couture Fashion House. Even better? He says he adores dressing his lady as she is so confident and knowledgeable.
Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Nukâka
Waldau has evoked a range of emotions from audiences that watch Game of Thrones through his portrayal of Jaimie Lannister, and his wife has also elicited a range of emotions too, but from a different kind of audience. In 1990, she entered the Miss Universe Pageant as Miss Greenland and finished in 19th place.
Although this may seem like a minor feat, 19 is actually the highest rank Greenland has ever achieved in Miss Universe, and it is still the record held today. After the pageant, she perfected her acting and singing skills, ultimately becoming known as Nukâka. The pair have two daughters together, who apparently aren’t huge fans of Game of Thrones. Maybe it has to do with the fact that Jaimie Lannister (A.K.A, their dad) has an affair with his sister on the show? But that’s just our guess.
Iain Glen and Charlotte Emerson
Iain Glen, who appears as Ser Jorah Mormont, may have sworn his loyalties to Daenerys Targaryen, but in real life, his allegiances are sworn to his wife, Charlotte Emerson. After Glen divorced from ex-wife, Susannah Harker after eleven years in 2004, he met Charlotte the following year.
The pair were together for twelve years and had two daughters together before they decided to marry in 2017. Susannah Harker is an English film, television, and theater actress who was nominated for a BAFTA TV Award in 1990 for her role as Mattie Storin in House of Cards. The pair are often seen on red carpets together, and it is reported that they support each other’s endeavors with much enthusiasm.
Aidan Gillen and Camille O’Sullivan
Petyr Baelish, A.K.A Littlefinger is known for his nefarious tricks, but actor Aidan Gillen is anything but wicked to girlfriend Camille O’ Sullivan. O’ Sullivan is an artist held in very high regards in the art world. In 2013, she was chosen by Yoko Ono to perform Double Fantasy Live at Meltdown Royal Festival Hall alongside the iconic Patti Smith.
She earned extraordinary reviews when she performed with the Royal Shakespeare Company, and she recently played at the Sydney Opera House. O’ Sullivan, not trying to reveal too much about their low-key relationship told Independent.ie that “I won’t talk too much about him! – but he is a wonderful thinker, and very funny too, with a serious side.”
Jacob Anderson and Aisling Loftus
Jacob Anderson has racked up quite a few impressive acting roles over the years besides his role as Grey Worm in Game of Thrones. Anderson, who performs under the stage name “Raleigh Ritchie,” is quite a creative individual and has multiple albums, his most notable being You’re a Man Now, Boy. He’s obviously successful in entertainment, but is he just as successful in his love life?
Spoiler alert, he is.
He has been dating War and Peace actress, Aisling Loftus for quite some time, and the two manage to keep the details of their relationship on the DL. What they have revealed, is that they are both fully supportive of the others’ works and make constant efforts to watch each other do their thing when possible.
Jason Momoa and Lisa Bonet
Besides being one of the most perfect couples in Hollywood, the two have hectic professional lives. You may be familiar with Momoa’s ruthless performance of Khal Drogo, or his recent performance as the sarcastic and unruly Aquaman, but in real life, there’s no taming necessary. Momoa has always been a family man, and he is more than dedicated to Bonet and their two children.
Momoa and Bonet have been together since 2005, and they’re one of those couples that will definitely make you believe that soulmates exist. He first spotted his lovely lady when he was just a boy, sitting in his living room, watching his future wife on The Cosby Show. He shared on The Late Late Show, “Ever since I was 8 years old and I saw her on TV, I was like, ‘Mommy, I want that one!’”
Michiel Huisman and Tara Elders
Long before the days of Game of Thrones and Daario Naharis, Huisman was acting in both Dutch and English language Television shows and films, including The Age of Adaline, and The Haunting of Hill House. Tara Elders made her film debut in 2001 and has appeared in multiple Dutch films since.
The pair had a daughter in 2007 and married in 2008. The couple has managed to keep their relationship on the secretive side, with Elders resigning from acting in 2009 to be a full-time mother. The family, who used to live in New Orleans, Louisiana, now reside in New York City.
Mark Addy and Kelly Biggs
Robert Baratheon is the eldest son and heir of Lord Steffon Baratheon and Lady Cassana Estermont of Storm’s End. The actor, Mark Addy, is happily married to wife Kelly Biggs. The pair married in 1996, and are still going strong! They have three children together, Ruby Johnson, Oscar Johnson, and Charlie Johnson.
Unfortunately, Mark Addy’s character departed in season 1, way before the show took off. Apparently, the actor was more than fine with this decision. He told British daytime show This Morning, “from our perspective I feel sorry for the guys going into the show now; there’s a huge expectation. For us, there was none really…”
Jonathan Pryce and Kate Fahy
Jonathan Pryce plays The High Sparrow in Game of Thrones, who’s quite a mysterious fellow seeing as his real name is unknown. Pryce isn’t as sketchy in real life though, as he’s married to Dublin-born actress, Katherine Fahy. They were in a relationship for 43 years before they were married.
They met each other while working as actors at the Everyman Theater in Liverpool in 1972. Scandalously enough, they were both married to other people when they met and broke up with their significant others a mere two weeks after the meeting. Throughout their relationship, they had three children; Patrick and Gabriel, born in 1986, and Phoebe, born in 1990.
Nathalie Emmanuel and Alex Lanipekun
Nathalie Emmanuel had a very humble start in British soap operas before starring as Missandei in one of the most popular television shows in the world. Emmanuel has been linked to fellow actor, Alex Lanipekun, best known for his rendition of journalist-spy Ben Kaplan on the BBC drama, Spooks.
We’re unsure how serious the two are relationship-wise, but if there’s one thing we know, it’s that they look incredibly happy together! This may come as disappointing news to fans of Game of Thrones seeing as many believed that the chemistry between Emmanuel and co-star, Jacob Anderson (Grey Worm) carried over into real life as well.
Maisie Williams and Ollie Jackson
Let’s be honest, we all feel like Maisie Williams is our little sister. We watched her grow up in front of our eyes as the bada** Arya Stark. It’s a little weird seeing her all grown up and dipping her toe into the dating pool. Although the pair have apparently been dating since 2015, fans began pushing Williams on social media to dump him after an awkward interview.
While speaking with EW, Williams said, “The hardest thing is in any series is when you build up a villain that’s so impossible to defeat and then you defeat them. It has to be intelligently done because otherwise, people are like, ‘Well, [the villain] couldn’t have been that bad when some 100-pound girl comes in and stabs him.’ You gotta make it cool. And then I told my boyfriend and he was like, ‘Mmm, should be Jon though really, shouldn’t it?’” Fans threw an absolute fit after this interview, and she recently unfollowed him on social media. Maybe she finally took her fans’ advice?
Iwan Rheon and Zoė Grisedale
Rheon has been quite the busy man ever since finishing his run on Game of Thrones as the sociopathic Ramsay Bolton. Besides appearing on Game of Thrones, Rheon played Mick Mars in the 2019 Netflix film The Dirt, based on Mötley Crüe. The pair have been together for a few years, and they share a daughter together.
Grisedale is an actress, film writer, director, and producer. She founded Grisedale Sherry Productions, a film, and theater production company. Apparently, the pair met at a resort where it is said that they scandalously skinny-dipped and fell in love. In 2018, the couple welcomed their first newborn.
Kit Harington and Rose Leslie
These two met back in 2012 on Game of Thrones when their characters, Jon Snow and Ygritte were having an affair. It looks like life does imitate art, as the pair sparked up a romance in real life and got married this year. Harington admitted during an interview with Vogue that he realized he was in love with Leslie while they were filming in Iceland.
He said, “The three weeks in Iceland when we were shooting the second season. Because the country is beautiful, because the Northern Lights are magical, and because it was there that I fell in love. If you’re already attracted to someone, and then they play your love interest in the show, it becomes very easy to fall in love…” Honestly, we’re just as obsessed with the two as every other media outlet, but we have one thing to say. In the words of Ygritte, “You know nothing, Jon Snow.” (Except how to pick ‘em).
Hafþór Björnsson and Kelsey Henson
Oh, you thought The Mountain’s height was due to CGI? Nope! He’s actually a mountain in real life. Standing at 6 ft 9 in, Hafþór Björnsson is an Icelandic professional strongman and actor. He is currently ranked as the World’s Strongest Man, and is the first person to have won the Arnold Strongman Classic, Europe’s Strongest Man, and World’s Strongest Man in the same year.
His girlfriend, Kelsey Henson, stands at 5 ft 2 in, and barely comes up to his shoulders. They met back in 2017 at a bar, when Henson asked for a picture with him. The rest is history. They were married in Iceland in 2018, with Björnsson captioning their wedding photos, “I get to hold this beautiful woman through thick and thin for the rest of our lives! I’m so excited for all of the future adventures we will tackle side by side.”
Lena Headey and Jerome Flynn
You may not recognize Headey outside of her Cersei get-up, but she does actually play the ruthless Queen of the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros. Flynn appears on the show as Bronn in the first season as a guest star and then joined the starring cast for the second season. So these two have quite an interesting and awkward story that begins before the time of Cersei and Bronn.
It is said that Headey and Flynn used to date back in 2002. Rumor has it that their relationship ended on such bad terms that they were furious when they found out they would be working with each other on Game of Thrones. There’s also a rumor floating around saying that there is a rule in their contracts that demands the two be separated at all times when on set. Yikes.
Sean Bean and Ashley Moore
Although Bean isn’t a stranger to walking down the aisle, it seems like he’s saved the best for last. In 2017, the actor, famous for playing Ned Stark on Game of Thrones, walked down the aisle with Ashley Moore after making claims that he would never walk down the aisle again. Although Bean was hesitant, he still decided to go through with it. The pair have known each other since 2012.
They got engaged after two years of dating, and their wedding was an intimate one. Moore has remained quite secretive about her life, although there are some reports that say she is a former nanny. Since starting a relationship with her famous husband, the media and fans have taken a special interest in her life.
Richard Madden and Jenna Coleman
Although Madden made his screen debut as a child actor, his breakthrough role appeared in the form as Robb Stark in HBO’s Game of Thrones. He received the Screen International Award for Star of Tomorrow and two SAG Awards for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series.
Jenna Coleman is also an actress, who appeared in the BBC series Doctor Who and played Queen Victoria in the ITV biographical drama Victoria. Unfortunately, after four years of an on and off again relationship, the pair split in 2015. There were rumors following the breakup claiming that Coleman had engaged in a relationship with Prince Harry, but this was debunked after the British star claimed they were just friends.
Richard Dormer and Rachel O’Riordan
Dormer does a fantastic job playing Lord Beric Dondarrion, head of House Dondarrion. However, it looks like he also enjoys putting a show on from behind the camera just as much as he enjoys putting one on in front of it.
Aside from being an actor, Dormer is also a very passionate playwright. This is probably why he and his wife, Rachel O’Riodan are so perfect together. Rachel O’Riordan is a theater director that has been responsible for dozens of productions all over Britain. And get this, some of the shows she’s directed? They were written by her playwright/actor husband.
Emilia Clarke and ?
Daenerys Stormborn of the House Targaryen, First of Her Name, the Unburnt, Queen of the Andals and the First Men, Khaleesi of the Great Grass Sea, Breaker of Chains, and Mother of Dragons. Bend the knee. Emilia Clarke has made quite the impact portraying the Mother of Dragons, and she is often referred to by media outlets as the “Dame of thrones.” Emilia has never been married and she was recently linked to film director Charlie McDowell.
Fans now speculate that this relationship has quietly faded out, due to a lack of social media posts. Emilia Clarke is probably Game of Thrones’s most eligible bachelorette, and she has a lot to show for her talent. In 2017, it was reported that she became one of the highest paid actors on television, potentially earning at least $1 million per episode. It’s possible that she’s not dating anyone at the moment, but with so many opportunities on her plate, does anyone really care?
Mark Gatiss and Ian Hallard
Mark Gatiss is well-known for his incredible work behind the camera, but he makes appearances in front of one when he can. You probably recognize him for his role as Tycho Nestoris in Game of Thrones. Gatiss and his husband, Ian Hallard, have been together for over a decade and they met online…back when it wasn’t something people did often.
Gatiss told The Guardian, “there was a genuine stigma in those days, which has completely vanished now. We didn’t tell our families – I said we’d met at a party or something like that because it was still a bit odd.” Regardless, the couple is incredibly happy together and married in 2018.
Gemma Whelan and Gerry Howell
Although Yara Greyjoy was considered to be a recurring guest role in Game of Thrones, she was still a pretty important part of Theon’s story. Although Whelan didn’t need to have many funny lines or dancing parts, she’s also a professional dancer, singer, and comedian as well as an actress.
In 2010, she won the Funny Women Variety Award for stand-up comedy, and in 2014, she recorded a chat show for BBC Radio 4. Gerard “Gerry” Howell also describes himself as a comedian, as well as a writer and “sometimes an actor.” Although his IMDB bio sounds modest, Howell is an award-winning comedian and BBC College of Comedy writer. Dinners with this couple must be an absolute hoot!
Tom Hopper and Laura Hopper
It looks like Tom Hopper jumped into Game of Thrones at just the right time. Even though he appeared as Dickon Tarly in only four episodes of the HBO hit, he appeared during a time when millions of viewers were tuning in around the world. Laura Hopper is also an experienced actress making appearances in Black Sails, Our Girl, and Leopard.
The pair were wed in 2017, but many fans and media are unsure as to how they met since they refuse to disclose the info. The loving couple has two children together, a son named Freddie Douglass Hopper, and a daughter called Truly Rose Hopper.
