You won’t believe this genius parenting gack Zooey Deschanel uses to get her kids to like broccoli
All parents know how difficult it is to make children eat their vegetables. In fact, anyone who’s ever been a kid remembers just how weird green vegetables like broccoli seemed while growing up. But alas, there is a solution and actress Zooey Deschanel has cracked the code on how to get her children to enjoy eating their veggies.
Mom to Elsie, 3, and Charlie, 15 months, Deschanel has found a genius way to coax her children into eating broccoli: gardening.
By showing her children where food comes from, Deschanel makes it easy for them to enjoy not-so-popular foods among young children.
Getting Into Greens
“When we started keeping a garden, our daughter became more interested,” Deschanel said. “She sees broccoli growing and we say, ‘You can eat this!’”
That’s not all Mommy’s teaching her kids. Deschanel and her husband, Jacob Pechenik, also teach their kids children about creative ways to flavor their veggies.
“It’s a wonderful way of changing their minds about things they’re not ordinarily attracted to… If you put lemon juice, olive oil and sea salt on anything, it’s going to taste delicious,” Deschanel said.
Where It All Began
Deschanel and Pechenik’s passion for healthy eating all started when the actress became pregnant with their first child.
“He kept asking what I was eating,” Deschanel said. “He was extremely curious about how we could optimize the baby’s health by investing time into and researching what the best foods were to eat.”
After that, it was easy for the couple to transition to healthy eating habits they are passing down to their children today.
“It wasn’t like we were eating unhealthy and then we just cleaned up our act,” Deschanel explained. “We ultimately landed on what was healthiest for us and the planet.”
