CBD: What it is and why it’s absolutely everywhere
Who knew three letters could make such an impact on health and wellness? CBD, also known by its official name cannabidiol, is a relatively new trend that’s hit the global market in a big way. In fact, the CBD market in the United States alone is expected to reach $22 billion by 2022. You can find CBD in everything from dog treats and edibles to facial creams, and even the most top-tier celebrities are using the product for its therapeutic purposes. But what exactly is CBD?
What is CBD?
CBD is a compound found in the cannabis plant. Yes, CBD is actually a component found in the marijuana plant which is still illegal in many states. Yet, CBD is legal to buy and sell online and in storefronts across the country. This is because CBD can also be derived from hemp, cannabis’ non-psychoactive cousin. Under the 2018 Farm Bill, hemp is totally legal. Typical marijuana, which is legal for medical use in 33 states and for adult-use in 11 states and Washington D.C., contains another compound that gets users high. This compound is called THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol. While CBD is also found in the cannabis plant, it does not get users “stoned.” What it does do, however, is provide relief from a variety of conditions such as pain, inflammation, epilepsy, and more. CBD can even be used to help conditions like anxiety. Because CBD has such a broad range of uses, it has become more popular than ever. CBD is effective because it binds to the body’s endocannabinoid system, which is found throughout the Central Nervous System, the digestive system, the immune system, and more. Other benefits of CBD include reduced depression, alleviated cancer-related symptoms, neuroprotective properties, increased heart health, antipsychotic effects, anti-tumor effects, diabetes prevention, and reduced nausea. The list goes on. CBD has even been found to help relax pets and control epileptic seizures in dogs.
Celebrities taking up the trend
Indeed, CBD has made quite the splash in the health and wellness market. So much so, that celebrities are taking notice. “This was a huge game changer,” actress Kristen Bell said about discovering CBD body lotion. “A few months ago, my back started hurting for some unbeknownst reason. It had been bothering me for about two weeks. My friend came over for dinner and I was complaining about my back and she ran to her purse and pulled out this CBD cream. I was very skeptical at first. I had already done some research on CBD, so I knew it was safe, but I thought, there’s no way this is actually going to help. But I’m a very good co-dependent, so I put it on my back and honestly, five minutes after I did, I already felt 85 percent better. I am completely sold. Now, I’m giving it out left and right, practically to strangers on the street. Everyone deserves to feel 100 percent.”
Even Kim Kardashian, debatably the world’s biggest influencer, has been on the CBD train for some time. “Anyone that knows me knows that I am obsessed with CBD everything! This is not an ad lol my fave right now is @pellequr,” Kim wrote on her Instagram story. She’s so obsessed with CBD, Kim even threw a CBD-themed baby shower to celebrate her fourth child. “So, because I’m freaking out and the baby is coming in, like, two weeks, I thought what better way to celebrate than to have a little CBD,” Kim told her guests, including celebrities such as Chrissy Teigen, Paris Hilton, and Larsa Pippen. “I thought it was kind of ridiculous to have a fourth baby shower. But I thought I’m freaking the f— out having a fourth kid,” Kim shared. “So everyone have a puff and put on some oil.” What a relaxing idea. Celebrities have caught on to CBD’s magic, as well as several retailers. Walgreens plans to sell CBD in 1,500 stores this year; Sephora has introduced a line of CBD-based creams and oils; even ice cream aficionado Ben & Jerry’s has indicated they want to produce CBD ice cream.
CBD in everyday products
You can find CBD in just about everything. The most popular products are CBD edibles. These types of edibles can include tinctures, which have a particularly high dose of CBD, as well as gummies and other foods. CBD capsules are very popular, too, for those who don’t like the taste of CBD tinctures. Another popular area of CBD products is topicals. As Kristen Bell referenced earlier, CBD topicals can include lotions, creams, massage oils, and more. Topicals are great for targeting specific areas where you’re feeling pain. They’re also really great for skin and beauty care products. If you’re a fan of baths, you’ll probably like CBD bath bombs. These work just like normal bath bombs, only the dose of CBD helps relax the muscles in the body even more. In addition, CBD can be vaped and smoked. If you’re looking to improve your health, it’s best to keep to just vaping. Just like an e-cigarette, you can find cartridges containing CBD oil. A few puffs here and there should help ease you out of whatever pain, anxiety, or other health issues you may be facing. Certainly, CBD has made quite the mark on the health and wellness industry. Though these products are great, the FDA has yet to approve CBD for widespread consumption. Once the FDA does issue guidelines, CBD products are sure to be even more prevalent.
