Halloween is a fun holiday for the whole family to dress up in creative costumes. There are endless possibilities to choose from, but do-it-yourself (DIY) costumes have become more popular in recent years, thanks to Pinterest and Instagram. Some ideas require more time and effort to complete, while other costumes can be made just a few days before Halloween. Just in case you need some inspiration this Halloween, here’s our list of the best DIY family costumes. Trick or treat!

‘The Wizard of Oz’

One of the most popular Halloween costumes, it’s easy for the whole family to dress up as their favorite characters from the 1939 classic film, The Wizard of Oz. You can incorporate several items from your wardrobe into the costumes. All you need is the final touches to accurately resemble the iconic characters: The Tin Man’s hat from a painted funnel, the Scarecrow’s body using some straw, and Dorothy’s sparkly ruby red slippers made from red fabric and glue glitter. Warning: Beware of the Wicked Witch of the West this Halloween season. She’s not very nice.

‘The Incredibles’

Dress up as your favorite family of superheroes this Halloween season. These costumes are easy to assemble, even if you’re not the best at DIY projects. Begin with red shirts, pants or tights, and then add the remaining details (including the recognizable The Incredibles logo) on the costumes with black, yellow, white and orange felt. Everyone will want your family to save the neighborhood this Halloween season.

Care Bears

One of the easiest DIY costumes available, it’s easy to transform your family into adorable Care Bears this Halloween. All you have to do is apply appliques on matching sweatpants and hoodies. These costumes will also keep your family warm as you go trick-or-treating in late October. Which Care Bear do you want to dress up as? That’s a difficult decision.

‘Toy Story’

Don’t be surprised if you see a lot of families dress up as Toy Story characters this Halloween season. With the summer release of Toy Story 4, the popular animated film franchise has gained new fans. You can make a Buzz Lightyear costume by wearing white pants and shirt (or a white dress), and apply green, red, and blue felt to resemble Buzz Lightyear.

In addition, you can make a toy alien costume by wearing a blue romper, lime green t-shirt, and matching lime green moccasins. Dress up as Woody or Jessie by wearing traditional cowboy or cowgirl attire. Complete the look with a cowboy hat. Howdy, partner!

‘Harry Potter’

It’s always fun for family members to dress up as characters from their favorite book or film series. For fans of the Harry Potter series, Halloween is a great holiday to dress up as Harry, Ron, and Hermione. To achieve the Hogwarts look, assemble some simple black robes and red and orange school ties. Parents can wear similar costumes, dressing up in a black robe as Professor Snape or in a light blue robe and a fake beard as Dumbledore. Don’t forget your trusty wand.

‘The Flintstones’

It’s been over 50 years since the finale of The Flintstones, but families still love the fun animated series. You can dress up as Fred Flintstone by wearing an orange robe, applying black felt, and wearing a blue tie. For Wilma, all you have to do is wear a simple white dress and a red wig. You can dress up as Barney Rubble by wearing a brown robe. Finally, for Betty Rubble, all you have to wear is a blue dress and a black wig. It’s that simple. Yabba Dabba Doo!

Where’s Waldo?

This is one of the easiest DIY costumes, but also easily identifiable. Break out the red-and-white striped shirts, beanie hats, and glasses to transform your family into Waldo characters. You don’t need much time to prepare for this costume, which is great for busy families. Just keep track of your children while you’re trick-or-treating. You wouldn’t want to play the real-life game of Where’s Waldo?

‘Mary Poppins’

With the 2018 release of Mary Poppins Returns, you can expect to see several families dress up as their favorite characters from the film. You can dress up as Bert by wearing a candy-striped suit. Don’t forget his signature chimney sweeping brush. Dress up as the one and only Mary Poppins in a white dress with a matching clear, see-through umbrella, or a blue coat with a red scarf and a dark-colored umbrella. Either two costumes are very iconic with the character. For another cute character, you can dress up a young child in an adorable penguin costume. Any costume can be completed with a kite. People will easily identify your costumes.

‘The Addams Family’

They’re creepy and they’re kooky, mysterious and spooky. You know who they are: The Addams Family. One of the most iconic Halloween families of all time, Gomez, Morticia, Wednesday, and Pugsley are returning to the big screen this Halloween season with a new animated film on October 11. Don’t be surprised if you see many Addams Family costumes on Halloween.

To dress up as Wednesday Addams, all you need is a black dress, white high-collar shirt, black tights, and black shoes. Wear your hair in braided pigtails. For Morticia Addams, wear a long V-neck black dress and black shoes. Wear a long black wig, parted in the middle.

For Gomez Addams, wear a black button-up suit, black bowtie, suspenders, black dress pants, and black shoes (black is the color of choice for the Addams family). You can also wear a black slicked-back wig. Finally, to dress up as Pugsley Addams, wear a black-and-white striped shirt and black pants. Be sure to snap your fingers after you say trick-or-treat!
